I love young Hugh Grant, and I was happy they let him keep his accent; it’s part of his charm! But I wouldn’t have cast Sandra Bullock in this role. Her character was written to be messy and whimsical, yet also direct and stern. Bullock, to me, is typecast in roles that are more serious in a silly movie (“Miss Congeniality”, “The Proposal”), and I don’t think she strikes the right balance here. Someone like Anne Hathaway would’ve made more sense; she plays aloof effortlessly (“The Princess Diaries”), but can also be sharp and assertive when needed (“The Devil Wears Prada”).
The plot was fine. There was a lot of buildup and rising action, but it took too long to reach the main conflict. At just over 100 minutes, it still somehow felt longer, like it dragged past the two-hour mark.
That said, I did enjoy the setting. The contrast between corporate Manhattan and the cozy boardwalk/family apartment scenes gave it some heart and variety.
Overall, this is a rom-com you can skip. I usually love early 2000s romantic comedies, but this one didn’t sit right with me. I prefer my Hugh Grant sweet and charming, not ignorant and obnoxious. Combine that with Sandra Bullock feeling miscast, and it just left a bad taste in my mouth.
If you’re looking for a romantic comedy with a solid New York vibe and a stronger cast, I’d recommend “Definitely, Maybe” instead.
